STEP 23 | The Skill of Connecting the Verses

The skill of connecting the verses helps to solidify the memorization. This is by way of pronouncing the last harakah (vowel sign) on the last letter of the verse, to the next word in the next verse. When you are able to identify that the harakah the word ends with, it helps to tie in the meanings and word order of the sentences together, thereby solidifying the memorization. This skill requires knowledge of the Arabic language, for example:

Allah says in the Noble Qur'aan:

Has there come to thee the news of the overwhelming calamity. Some faces on that day will be downcast; toiling, weary; they shall enter a blazing fire, and will be made to drink from a boiling spring. They will have no food save that of dry, bitter and thorny herbage,} [Al- Ghashyah 1-6]

When connecting { ٱلۡغَٰشِيَةِ } to the word coming after it makes it pronounced with "kasrah" because it is Mudaf ileihi (مضاف إليه), and when { خَٰشِعَةٌ } is connected to what comes after it, it becomes" Dhammah" because it is Khabar (خبر) of { وُجُوهٞ }.

And when connecting { نَّاصِبَةٞ } to what comes next to it, it becomes marfoo'ah because it is an adjective (صفة/ نعت) for {وُجُوهٞ }.

And, when connecting { حَامِيَةٗ } to the next word, it will be mansoobah because it is an adjective (صفة/ نعت) to { نَارًا }.

So, we notice the importance of "Dhabt" (paying particular attention to the last vowel signs on the words especially at the ends of the verses) and the way it changes from "kesrah to dhammah, to Fat-ha". This skill without a doubt significantly impacts the ability of the memorizer to perfect their memorization, and it requires adequate knowledge of the Arabic language as has been shown in the explanation above.
